About Stuart O’Dea

Stuart O’Dea is a Board Member of Hope TKF Animal Welfare Foundation with a strong dedication to good governance through the application of wisdom, pragmatism and effective leadership decision making.

Stuart commenced his career as Commodities Markets analyst for the Commonwealth Bank group in 1982 following his graduation in Applied Economic Geography. His honours thesis involved extensive original demographic and economic research covering internal migration within Australia. In 1985 he moved into the rapidly evolving corporate banking world in which he gained commercial expertise in risk management and the development of good, practical lending policy. Following completion of his Master of Applied Finance degree in 1990, Stuart worked in structured finance which included complex financing of shipping, large mining equipment and aircraft, with legal and taxation frameworks crossing international jurisdictions.

Stuart’s extensive corporate finance career encompassed diverse roles in banking and consulting, with a focus on risk identification and mitigation covering all levels of the banking market from small businesses to institutional banking clients. This was the catalyst for his later move supporting the charity and not-for-profit sector’s small and medium- sized enterprises, particularly in developing economies.

In 2013 Stuart stepped away from the commercial world in a transition to the education and not-for-profit sector, seeking personal enrichment and professional fulfilment. He served as Entrepreneur Mentor and Educator at Bridge Business College in Sydney’s CBD, giving guidance and advice to budding business owners in bi-weekly workshops. Contemporaneously, Stuart commenced working as a consultant to Grameen Australia (Philippines) Inc., initially focusing upon microfinance operations and later in an expanded role as management consultant, providing regular reviews of operations in the Philippines and recommending actions to the Board (on which he now sits).

Stuart possesses applied knowledge of problem-solving techniques. He can distil and crystallise seemingly amorphous issues and translate complex information into practical insights.

Stuart is dedicated to both encouraging and participating in effective governance across all spheres, particularly in the charity and not-for-profit sectors.

Stuart brings strong decision-making skills and commercial acumen to Hope TKF.
